audience annoyance...

aaaaaaaarghhh...

sometimes audience members really annoy me. they think they can get away with anything and everything. i don't think they realize how distracting their behavior can be to both performers on stage and other spectators sitting next to them in the theater.

example:

i recently attended a local dance event for a studio company (meaning pre-professional dancers from a studio performing to raise money or get performance experience), and a young lady in front of me kept peeking at her flip open cell phone. she does this about three times during every blackout between dances. it appears she's texting someone and can't seem to pull herself away. finally i leaned over and said "the theater's dark for a reason". she seemed to be a combination of embarrassed and annoyed at my audacity to speak up.

so to educate future audience members about the proper etiquette at a performance i've created a list.

1. WHEN THE VOICE ABOVE ASKS YOU SILENCE YOUR PHONE, JUST TURN IT OFF. ARE YOU REALLY THAT IMPORTANT THAT YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT CONTACTING SOMEONE ON THE OUTSIDE FOR TWO HOURS.

2. IF YOU'RE LATE, WAIT FOR A BREAK TO ENTER THE THEATER AND FIND YOUR SEAT. DON'T JOIN THE AUDIENCE IN THE MIDDLE OF A DANCE BECAUSE THE PERFORMERS MIGHT BECOME DISTRACTED AND DISORIENTED WITH ALL THE MOVEMENT.

3. GO TO A SHOW WITH AN OPEN MIND, IT'S JUST MORE FUN THAT WAY.

enjoy your time at the theater, and remember to be a courtious audience member.
